Who We Are

Saint Tabitha Orphanage was founded by Father Agapios Habbil Lipesa Omukuba, an Orthodox priest of the Kisumu Diocese of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

Originally, the orphanage was housed at Saint George parish but was relocated for the security and welfare of the children.  As a ministry of the Diocese of Kisumu, we operate under the omophorion of His Grace Athanasius of Kisumu and West Kenya.

Catherine Sofikitis, a Greek Orthodox lay woman, has been instrumental in the success of our missionary efforts.  She lives in the United States but has dedicated herself to helping us raise money to take care of the orphan children.

The safety and welfare of the children is our first and most important concern.  During the week, they rise at 4:20 am in order to prepare to go to school. After their morning prayers and breakfast, they are off to class.  They return to our orphanage at noon for lunch before going back to school for the afternoon.  Once the children finish the classes, they return to us.  We make sure their homework assignments are completed and we prepare an evening meal for them.

On the weekends, each child participates in work around the orphanage to teach them the values of responsibility and hard work.
